Atmosphere:
Long, perfect, walled up sand dredging tubes that will leave you with a huge smile.

The Problem?

If you've ever surfed Sandspit in Santa Barbara you know its fickle... this is its little brother up north that breaks even less frequent... which is pretty hard to do. If you have surfed The Harbor in Santa Cruz it is the same kind of wave... but a longer tube.

Before the breakwall, the point at Avila Beach was actually a decent surf spot, and when the sand came together it could connect and become one long super tube. When they put in the breakwall sand could no longer accumulate and just washed to the bottom.

Since Port San Luis is at the bottom of Avila Point thats where all the sand washed down to, and since it breaks so infrequently, that is where it will stay for years to come.

ONLY ON THE BIGGEST SWELLS OF THE YEAR WILL THIS FICKLE WAVE BREAK. DOUBLE OVERHEAD SSE HURRICANE SWELLS MIGHT MAKE HEADHIGH WAVES IN HERE. 20 FOOT WEST SWELLS MIGHT MAKE CHEST HIGH WAVES.

THE MORE SOUTH OR EAST IN THE SWELL THE BETTER, PRIME DIRECTION 180 - 160 HUGE SWELL.
