Turtle Island
Edit SpotAbout
Whatever business you have in Sierra Leone, if you have a few extra days, check these islands and report back. There is a ton of potential but it takes time to get there.
Additional Info:
All I know is that the waves get big in a country where there aren't many big waves. I never surfed it but heard of from a third party that it gets big and good.

Take 4X4 transport from Freetown to Tombo (a few hours depending on weather, road conditions). On Thursdays catch the public boat to Bonthe. From there catch a weekly boat to the Turtle Islands and bring camping gear.
A safer alternative is to arrange all boat transfers with the main Turtle Island operator (Daltons Banana Guesthouse 076278120). In this case take taxi from Freetown to Kent (30'-90')where the boat will meet you for the 4 hour journey to the Turtle Islands. It is not a matter of comfort (faster boat, food supplies, bottled water, tents, experienced crew, etc.) provided, but a matter of safety (second engine, compass, GPS, tourist operator safety standards applied, life jackets, daylight travel and a lot more) that can make a difference something goes wrong.
