There are sevral breaks near the pier: of course there's North Side and South Side, but there's a couple of sandbars on either side and a jetty on the north side that can produce some good waves.
Try to avoid parking in the lots, they are generally way overpriced and with some time you can locate a street spot that'll cost you sometimes $8 less. Park in the alleys. There are signs that say 'no parking'  but they aren't enforced.
