Al Deira Beach, Gaza

About

Al Deira is located in the Gaza Strip, which is no longer located in Israel. Gaza is no longer under Israeli control and is recognized as a transitional state-entity that will eventually become part of the State of Palestine, as outlined in the Oslo Agreement and recognized by the UN and the international community, including Israel.

Gaza is currently controlled by Hamas, which is internationally recognized as a terrorist group. Gaza is extremely dangerous for foreigners, who are discouraged, and in most cases forbidden, from entering Gaza.

Gaza City is home to The Gaza Surf Club (www.gazasurfclub.com), who can be contacted via the website and at gazasurfclub@hotmail.com

None of the members of the surf club speak English so if you wish to make contact with them, you can contact the Surf Club sponsor, Explore Corps (www.explorecorps.org) at info@explorecorps.org

Atmosphere:
Gaza is a war zone, plain and simple. There are a few of us that travel in and out of Gaza on a semi-regular basis, but our movement and ability to cross the border is derived from years of building the right contacts on both the Israeli side and Palestinian side of the border.

If you are interested in getting into Gaza, or helping out with the surf-based initiatives there, please contact the experts first. This place is not a joke.
Feel free to contact me directly with any questions at m.olsen@explorecorps.org

Additional Info:
Similar to many of the waves up north in Israel around Tel Aviv with rock bottom. Prefers rights which peel over the reef with hollow sections on the very inside, quite shallow, best over 3 feet. Located next to Gaza Harbor

Please note that because of infrastructure damage to the Gaza sewage treatment system, all of the untreated sewage for Gaza City is currently pumped in to the sea at the Gaza Harbor. Until this situation is changed, IT IS EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH TO ENTER THE WATER! Do not surf here!

Access

Access into Gaza requires transit through Israel and a special Israeli Army Gaza Permit that is near impossible to get. Once in Gaza, any taxi will take you to the Al Deira hotel and the break is right out front, next to the harbor.
